The nigger of the "Narcissus": AMs and related material, [1896]-1897.

Complete manuscript of the novel, with numerous corrections and alterations by Conrad and pencilled notes in the hand of his friend Edward Garnett. Foliated 1-194 (blank lower half of 49 torn away, additional portion taped over lower half of 105 detached but present, 175 is three pieces taped together, 194 has additional piece attached at end). Also present are one leaf (157) in typescript with holograph corrections; the manuscript, as sent to the publishers, of the note on the suppressed preface, written for the 1914 Doubleday edition and titled "To my readers in America" (3 l.); a photostat of a letter from Conrad to John Quinn [s.d.] about the manuscript; and a wrapper inscribed by Conrad, "begun in 1896 June finished in 1897 Febr. 7."
